Grandma Grace

Grace was my Dad's mother. She was born in Washington, D.C., but she grew up in Oxford, Michigan. One of her earliest memories was attending the presidential inauguration of FDR while sitting on her father's shoulders in order to see over the crowds. Her Dad had been a Senate Page Boy, and both of his parents worked for the Taft Administration. Grace attended both the University of Michigan and Michigan State University to acquire a Master of Science in Mathematics and a BA in Political Science. She only ever listened to classical music, and she ate 6 pieces of dark chocolate for breakfast every day. She was a watercolor artist and photographer, frequently submitting her work to art shows in Michigan. Grace loved to read and enjoyed learning about many things, including Philosophy and psychology, history, and science. Grace was a spirited free thinker who enjoyed digging out places in your mind to plant thoughts like seeds to watch you think and grow. She wanted everyone to think for themselves and enjoyed debating controversial topics; there were very few things she would shy away from discussing if you came to her with an open mind. As open to talking as she was, she also happened to be a very private person who rarely discussed personal matters. Grace also strongly shied away from using labels to describe herself and despised being placed in boxes. She first placed a paintbrush in my hands when I was 3 years old and told me that I was an artist. She always supported my creative nature and welcomed my preference for non-conformity. She was not necessarily the warm and fuzzy Grandmother that many people talk about. She was educated, curious, independent, and opinionated, and I truly appreciated those things about her. Grace passed away at the end of March 2025, and I miss her every day.
